The Handmaids in Margaret Atwood's book and the Hulu series are a stunning sight, with their white robes and red wings. The significance of the costume transcends its use as a character in a dystopian fiction: The iconic outfit has become a symbol for women's oppression around the world. It's not the first time costumes from The Handmaids Tale has gone viral. Women also wear white robes as a symbol of the purity of their eyes and the blindness. This is to keep from seeing the horrors that they are living in. Crabtree said she was inspired by various groups that wear white, such as the Amish or the Danish popular cult, known as Tvind.She says the colors are meant to represent different roles women play on the show. The red color of the Handmaids' outfits is meant to represent their wombs and flow of blood during childbirth The blue color of the women's dresses is a representation of the Virgin Mary. Crabtree was also inspired by Western religious iconography, such as the colors of Mary Magdalene's clothes in the Bible.Crabtree says that working with the main characters of the show, specifically Moss is her most top part. She recalled a scene from season two that's one of the most memorable moments. In it, Offred has to euthanize her infant by choking her throat and breaking her stomach. The robes worn by the Handmaids were used in protests to defend women's rights in the US as well as around the world and some brands have even made their own versions.The curators at the Smithsonian take each costume with utmost care. When the collection was donated curators place the robe in a specially designed mannequin that reduces stress on the fabric. The front of the mannequin remains shut to prevent forming wrinkles in the fabric. it will be kept in the body pillow made according to Moss dimensions to preserve the form. The museum is currently developing a permanent exhibit to be released soon. You can see the original robe at the National Museum of Natural History for the moment.
