Marguerite Caine's physicist parents are known for their groundbreaking achievements. Their most astonishing invention, called the Firebird, allows users to jump into multiple universes-and promises to revolutionize science forever. But then Marguerite's father is murdered, and the killer-her parent's handsome, enigmatic assistant Paul-escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him. Marguerite refuses to let the man who destroyed her family go free. So she races after Paul through…show more.

The pacing of the narrative is almost perfect. As the suspense builds, we are gently distracted by domestic events, such as the almost forgotten dinner party. Even there, the conversation leads Dave to some new ideas and causes one of the guests to call the next day with a potential clue. Every scene builds to the resolution, but the reader is given a breather from the intensity.

His need is not for money, but for the challenge of the puzzle. And the puzzles are some of the most intricately constructed I have ever encountered in my reading. The crimes themselves are usually bizarre, more gruesome than I normally enjoy reading about.

This well-behaved and gifted student may or may not have been kidnapped, but she has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. This is a very modern take on the office thriller, because the office in question is a feminist take on work-share facilities like WeWork?. It’s an exclusive, women-only coworking space launched by celebrity entrepreneur Eleanor Walsh. Millennial women are dying to be accepted?at least until Eleanor herself is found dead.

I was close to loosening my clothing and fanning myself as Liz Daniel’s confronts her husband’s dour parents in the heat and humidity of August in a stifling farmhouse on the flat plains of western New York. (And I read Ruin Falls during the coldest winter I can remember, so it took some good writing to generate my reaction!) Descriptions of the deep forests of New York State evoke both the beauty and the menace. It gets the point across that we are in a different time through descriptions of dress and movement and plot, rather than through “fancy talk,” as one of my clients put it. It doesn’t mean that conversation needs to be vague or non-descriptive?just not flowery.

But I'm not sure why anyone in 2014 would spend $75 on it ($65 for the paperback) when more and better factual information is readily available online, for free.

Rare books and manuscripts, you see, are supposed to remain at a fairly stable temperature and humidity.

There may be other reasons that the phrase “special order” turns off customers, and I would be interested to hear from book buyers who know what they are and have suggestions for making the concept more palatable.

I try to write about a world that exists in varying degrees and shades of black and white.

I could certainly get in touch if I were in that area. I definitely would hope Hank Philippi Ryan could find some time. Klise manages to touch on quite a few interesting issues, especially cultural, religious and socioeconomic diversity as exemplified by Saba and other students. The mystery is not particularly complex, but it did keep me guessing until the end. While the crimes committed are serious, there’s no violence or drugs involved. https://ctxt.io/2/AABQgQCPFQ of Secrets will be engrossing for most young adult readers, and quite a few grown-ups as well.

ng%Dog On It

I picked up Asking for Truffle because I love another series written by Dorothy St. James (the Beloved Bookroom Mysteries), and this series hooked me as well. Books are like going on vacation, so when an author comes with a smile on their face you already have made a friend and honestly a loyal reader to come. And also understand, I’m not saying don’t be ambitious. I don’t want only tidy dramas in small towns or, you know, Good Expectations. But when you are thinking “OK, what if the dog can fly?

For me, the way crimes and criminal investigations unfolded, and the personalities of the officers involved, were multi-dimensional and touched with surprising, and often unexpected, moments of humor. In my reading as well as my writing, I seek a balance between authenticity and a sense of the absurd, without which the experience of solving murders?real or fictional?could become emotionally crushing. This weekend is the psychological, if not literal, beginning of summer. For the passionate reader, this means that it’s time to plan and dream about all the leisure hours available to be filled with books.

ng%Roxana's Book List On

What the books do have in common is a lead character who does not realize her own inner strength until she is placed under extraordinary stress. They stop at a hotel en route and Liz wakes to find the children gone.

ng%Danielle's Book List On

There is another book all about that, The Man in the Rockefeller Suit by Mark Seal. There was even a Lifetime TV movie about Gerhartsreiter. Rather, this is the story of Kirn’s relationship with the man he knew as Clark Rockefeller and how being a writer affected the situation. I read Robert Galbraith’s (aka J. K. Nothing about where you went to college or your day job at the Walgreen's. If the author in this case had some expertise in an assisted living facility, it would make sense to say so--any connection to the material that lends credibility is good. But NEVER mention directly that this is your first novel; let them ask when they're interested.

ng%Why Did Danielle Love This Book?

I'm not a stalker or a depraved sex fiend (I'm pretty sure). Not that I didn't want the doorway, but I wasn't sure about my own ability, and after all, was about to cut a great big hole in a wall in my house. I find that I am sympathetic to characters who face issues similar to mine, even if their behaviors (and mine) are not particularly attractive. At least I’m not the only one to feel or behave that way. Despite being published in the nascent days of the internet, this book would still be of great use to anyone writing detective fiction.

Since I’m primarily a fiction writer, I also like a little mystery and tension in these otherwise idyllic little towns, not to mention the occasional scone and cup of tea. It was the first house I'd ever owned, and the first one in which I even considered the idea of renovation. I've never entered a writing contest for novelists, so I can't speak to that from experience. Many will enter, very, very few will be chosen. Right now, my son is two years out of college and wants to work in the film/TV business. He's talented, but this is the worst employment market since Tom Joad graduated from Hard Knox.
