Developed by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist, family constellations combine elements of systems therapy and existential phenomenology. In a constellations session, clients share their issues or concerns with the facilitator who then chooses individuals to represent them and their relatives in relation to one another. These representatives often feel the underlying emotional energy of the person or situation that they are representing, and express thoughts, feelings and movements from their own knowing body. This systemic approach can reveal underlying dynamics that contribute to difficulties in relationships, health problems and other aspects of life.Family Constellations are a type of group therapy that can be conducted in groups or individually, with participants sitting or standing in for family members who are not present. The facilitator asks the representative to tap into the emotional energy field of the person or situation they are representing, and to communicate those underlying dynamics to the rest of the constellation participants. https://userscloud.com/34ldnyjgrt59 This is believed to create a sense of connection that can be felt by all the individuals participating in the constellation. Hellinger calls this feeling of connectedness a morphogenic field. The concept of a family constellation is rooted in Hellinger’s belief that the stress and negativity people experience in their lives can be traced back to the effects of unresolved family trauma from generations before them. His theory states that a person can heal from these traumatic effects by working to break the inherited family patterns that are contributing to them. While the method has been gaining popularity in Germany, where it originated, criticisms of the practice have been mounting. Critics point to Hellinger’s misogynistic, homophobic and other problematic views. He has said, for example, that he believes war criminals should not be blamed for their crimes, and he has encouraged survivors of abuse to thank their abusers during family constellation sessions.Hellinger has also reportedly led Jewish participants in his workshop sessions to view their descent as a negative aspect of their identity. This type of anti-Semitic and racist attitude has caused some of the most serious criticisms of the work. The constellations in the palms are called ‘family constellations’ because they are grouped together and are related by some kind of theme or mythological association. They are all part of the larger zodiac constellation family, and are located along the ecliptic ? the path that the sun appears to follow around the Earth each year.
