The Dana 60 is a front axle found in many OEM pickup truck applications, as well as some full size passenger car applications. The axle can be identified by its straight axle tubes, 10 bolt asymmetrical cover and "60" cast into the housing. The axle also features a "standard" or open gear set and either a locking or limited slip differential. The axle is a popular upgrade in offroad applications due to its strength, traction control capabilities and low gross axle weight ratings which reduce loads on other powertrain components. There is a large selection of aftermarket and third party upgrades available for the Dana 60 including stronger axle shafts, larger diameter ring and pinion, and a variety of traction control devices. The axle can also be upgraded to a Dana Super 60 which features larger universal joints and larger bearings which increases strength, steering angle and load capacity. While all semi-floating (passenger car type) Dana 60 axles have the same basic dimensions, the major spline diameter where the yoke mounts is 0.070" larger than the Chrysler 8 3/4" and therefore yokes do not interchange. Also, the axle's right side shaft is always shorter than the left, so the yoke is mounted on a smaller end of the housing. A yoke retainer nut is used to secure the yoke to the axle. This nut is held with a 7/8"-14 NF thread and fits a 1-5/16" socket. All Dana 60 housings are stamped with a "Bill of Materials" number and a date code. These stampings are usually located on the back of the right axle tube, 2-3 inches outboard from the center section. The BoM numbers and date codes are printed in a sans serif font and are about 1/8" high. https://files.fm/f/fcn2b3kg8 are a 6-digit number followed by a one or two digit suffix, while the date code is a six digit year code (example: XXXXX-XXXX).To determine whether an axle is a Dana 44 or a Dana 60, a simple inspection will help. The easiest way is to count the number of bolts holding the drum backing plate onto the axle. If there are 7 bolts, it is a GMC/Chevy/Jeep Dana 60, and if there are 6 bolts, it is a Dodge/FORD Dana 60.There are a few other relatively easy ways to tell if the axle is a Dana 44 or if it's a Dana 60, but the most reliable method is counting the number of bolts that hold the drum backing plate on the axle. All GM and Dodge Dana 60s have the same bolt pattern, and most Ford Dana 60's use the same. The only difference between the two is that a GM and Dodge Dana 60 has the "stop sign" shaped cover while a Ford Dana 60 has a round cover. The GM and Dodge versions of the Dana 60 are lubricated by a multi-piece seal, while the Ford version uses a pressed in bearing with a single piece seal.
