When Jeep enthusiasts modify their rear axles for superior strength over rocks, across sand and through mud, Dana takes notice. That’s why the company has engineered a bolt-in solution that delivers premium performance for your JL Wrangler right out of the box with their Ultimate Dana 60.A Dana 60 axle features a 9-3/4-inch ring gear that is designed to handle extreme loads and high-horsepower drivetrain combinations. With a gross axle weight rating of up to 500 pounds, the Dana 60 is a real workhorse and one of the strongest passenger car-style rear axles available. These axles are also designed to handle high-torque applications by utilizing an integrated, three-hole mounting surface on the front of the housing for the pinion snubber. A pinion snubber is a device that helps keep the rear end aligned with the rest of the drivetrain under heavy torque loads and prevents pinion damage from over-loading the differential.Typically, the snubber is made from an automotive-grade metal that has been powder coated to resist corrosion and increase its durability. A snubber may be installed in either the passenger-car or industrial-type housing. https://www.file-upload.com/lqlcz0gg1d35 The difference between the two types is that the passenger-car configuration has a special flange mounted on the bottom of the housing that allows the installation of passenger car-style end hubs. All Dana 60 housings are stamped with a build date and bill of materials number on the back side of the passenger-side axle tube (Figure 1). This information is not visible unless the housing is removed from the vehicle and carefully cleaned or inspected with a strong magnifying glass in good light. The stampings are small and can be difficult to read, but they are present on all original Dana 60 axles.Aside from the flange, there are a few other things that can help determine which type of Dana 60 you have. If you have a GMC/Chevy/Jeep Dana 60, you can tell it apart from other models by counting the number of bolts that hold the drum backing plate to the housing. A GM/Chevy/Jeep-style Dana 60 has 7 bolts while other models have 8. The number of bolts is not the only thing that can tell you which kind of Dana 60 you have; each one is stamped with a code for the model it was made for.Although the 68-inch housing is not a direct fit in most TJs, it can be made to work with a little effort by cutting the axle tubes and machining 11/32" off each side of the housing to set up the proper amount of side play. This is a job that can be easily done with an electric grinder, but it should be performed only by an experienced mechanic. Using this method will significantly reduce the risk of failure. Using this method will also eliminate the need to ream the carrier bearing holes when setting side play. This will result in a more precise axle width and a better driveline alignment.
