So apparently they don’t have issues getting women to go into STEM fields in their countries. Why do we in ours?

I’ve wondered this too. My brother married an Italian physicist and he lives in Pisa with his family. Interestingly, in Italy the field of physics is 50% M, 50% F. I asked my SIL about this, and the most interesting thing she shared was that she was tracked for physics from 8th grade. Essentially, she was told then that she would be sent to the Math/Science high school and would concentrate in physics, because she showed high aptitude for it. There was also a liberal arts high school, and one small high school with everything for the small number of students who were equally gifted in all areas.

That kind of system would never, ever be tolerated in the U.S. We won’t even acknowledge our gifted and talented students.

Ever since the ’60s in the USA there has been this huge condemnation of the STEM fields in popular culture. They are portrayed as inhuman, anti-life, and worst-of-all uncool.

Furthermore, to excel in these fields requires rather single-minded concentration just at the time people hit adolescence. There are huge distractions, and students with technical bent aren’t shielded from them. Girls in particular are easily swayed by the disapproval of their peers.

We’ve also dumbed down the teaching staff, and therefore the curriculum. Students aren’t as well prepared. There’s a point to drill-and-kill. It puts the algorithms for arithmetic so deep your intuition can use them. Teachers find it boring, so we get “new math” instead.
